Clinical trials are studies carried out on people to obtain knowledge on either existing, or new, treatments (pharmacological or non-pharmacological). These trials are fundamental to increasing scientific evidence and, if their design is methodologically sound, are the only way to produce reliable data. People may choose to participate in trials for various reasons. These include playing a more active role in their own health care, gaining access to new research treatments before they are widely available, and helping others by contributing to medical research. Participants will also receive high quality medical care and will be followed closely by health professionals throughout the study. Some risks are also present, however, and these comprise the possibility of experiencing adverse reactions to the treatment being tested or of receiving an ineffective treatment.

Two types of trials exist: experimental and observational. In experimental trials, the patient receives a drug or other medical intervention so that its efficacy can be assessed. In observational trials, no new intervention is used; researchers simply observe the course of events following the routine intervention with the aim to describe a disease or its complications and/or a diagnostic-therapeutic process.

The “Mario Negri” Institute’s clinical trials register includes all observational and experimental clinical trials in which the institute’s laboratories take part as participants or coordinators.

The register’s aims reflect the ethical and scientific needs and responsibilities (Box) that are well-acknowledged by the scientific community and the lay public.

Each record present in the register contains detailed clinical trial information that is freely accessible to all. The trials can be searched using the search module provided.

For additional information on clinical trials, visit the PartecipaSalute website. It is a portal on health topics aimed at increasing the public’s participation and decision-making power in their own health care and is coordinated by the “Mario Negri” Institute.
